The Edgington Ancestry

Unfortunately, available documents only go back to my wife's father -- James Edgington (1886 - 1956) and his four brothers -- Tom, Albert, George, and William.

Some of the present Edgingtons have apparently heard that they originated from a town called Limrick (?), which was north of London , England.  Edgington is a common name, and there could be many related and unrelated families spread around Canada and other countries.  It was common in those days, for the children, to not know where their parents came from, and if they did, then it was very brief .

There was more known about Rose's mother's side -- the Chatwells.  It is known that Susan's Grandfather (Eli Chatwell) was born around 1826 in Virginia or Tennessee, U.S.A.  There is no further information as to where Eli's parents came from, but it is rumored that they emigrated from England.

Eli had 8 children -- four brothers and sisters.  The first born was named Allan, who married Eliza Ann Coe, from Manitowaning, Manitoulin Island, Ontario.  They had 6 children, and Rose's mother (Susan) was their last child.  She was born December 26, 1897.

In Canada, some Edgingtons originated in Don Mills and Stratford, Ontario, and the majority settled down at Resource, Saskatchewan.  Rose's  father (James Edgington), was born in Don Mills, Ontario on March 14, 1886.  He married Susan Chatwell from Manitowaning, Manitoulin Island on June 4, 1915, at Twickenham, Saskatchewan. (which no longer exists).  They had 10 children -- James, John, Ernest, Victor, Gordon, Arnold, May, Rose, Donald and Robert.

Their first child James died at birth.  In 1920, they moved to Rutland, B.C. (near Kelowna), where John, Ernest, Victor, and Gordon were born.  In 1929 they made their final move to Richmond, B.C., where Arnold, May, Rose, Donald and Robert were born.

James Edgington was a very industrious, thrifty and religous person.  At age 25 in 1911, he started farming in Twickenham, Saskatchewan, and he was also a carpenter, and built his first house and barn in 1912.  He built another house in Rutland, B.C. and two more houses in Richmond, B.C.

James was born on March 14, 1886, and died on July 24,1956 at age 70.
Susan was born on December 26, 1897, and died on March 25, 1964, at age 67.

Their children and grandchildren:
  • John married Nancy Stead -- 1 child Neil.
  • Ernest died in World War 11 in Italy on December 10, 1943, age 20.
  • Victor married Ethel Rossman -- no children.
  • Gordon married Etta Mattice -- 1 child Joseph.
  • Arnold married Kathleen O'Flynn -- 6 children - Michael, Barbara, Edward, Patricia, Alan, and Karen.
  • May married Arthur Faust -- 1 son George.
  • Rose married Herbert Hinz -- 7 children - Darrell, Kevin, Rodney Daphne, Cheryl, Sandra, and Brian.
  • Donald married Roberta Warland -- 5 children - Donna, Valerie, Donald, Ronald, and Stanley.
  • Robert married Joanne Gibons -- 2 children - Leah & Scotty.  Divorced.  Robert then lived common-law with Catherine MacFarlane -- 2 children - Thomas and Timothy.  Robert had 4 step-children from Catherine -- Dennis, Valerie, Douglas, and Ronald.

They had 23 grandchildren, and 31 (plus) great grandchildren.  There is a possibilty of 4 or 5 more great grandchildren.

Rose has outlived all members of her family.  Don and Bob were both younger than her.  May was older by two years, and passed away in Courtenay, B.C. on March 28, 1999 at age 66.

Don died in Lillooet, B.C. on September 9, 1983 at age 47.

Bob died in Surrey, B.C. on February 25, 1999 at age 60.
